Blackjack: Surrender

Surrender: Sometimes Giving Up Moves You Ahead

The idea of "surrendering" certainly carries a negative connotation. Most Americans' hate the idea.

Well, in Blackjack "surrendering" a bad hand can save you A LOT of money in the long run. Put your pride aside!

Its been estimated that only 15-20% of all casinos allow "surrender" at their Blackjack tables. That's because it is an advantageous rule for the player.

Honestly, if ALL casinos offered surrender, I doubt most would ever use it. I've played at full tables that offered surrender. Guess what? I was the only one that ever made use of the option! Players are generally uniformed about the benefit of surrendering bad hands.

What is Surrender?

"Surrender" means just what it says. You give up after you are dealt your first two cards. BUT, in doing so, you only lose HALF your wager!

There are two "flavors" of Surrender: Early and Late.

"Early Surrender," which I've NEVER seen available at tables, is when you can surrender your hand BEFORE the dealer checks for Blackjack. It's the BEST option of Surrender as the dealer pulling a Blackjack is an automatic loss (unless you have Blackjack too).

If you thought finding a table that offered "surrender" was tough, try finding one that offers Early Surrender! Why? Early Surrender reduces the casino's edge by around .6%!  That's HUGE considering youre playing with only around a .5% DISADVANTAGE with playing Basic Strategy!

"Late Surrender," is what most casinos offer that have the surrender rule available. You guessed it, in this type of game you can surrender AFTER the dealer checks for Blackjack. If the dealer has Blackjack, you still lose your full bet.

Late Surrender reduces the House's edge by around .07%. Compare that to Early Surrender's .6%! Now you know why I've NEVER seen a casino offer "early surrender"...

When Should I Surrender?

Given the most popular rules of the Dealer HITTING a "Soft"17 multi-deck shoe game, here's when you should surrender your hand according to "Basic Strategy:"
  • 15     Against Dealer's: 10 or Ace
  • 16     Against Dealer's: 9, 10 or Ace
  • 17     Against Dealer's: Ace
  • 8/8   Against Dealer's: Ace
